Last weekend we had the pleasure of leading an intimate yoga and beer pairing session for Ottawa’s community supporting Movember Ottawa. Movember Ottawa is the local chapter of the Movember Canada, the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. They address some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.
Taking place on a snowy Sunday morning at Wallack Galleries, one of Canada’s oldest commercial art galleries, located in Ottawa’s Centretown, we stretched, we sipped, and we socialized by sharing personal stories on why were there choosing to support men’s health. After working our way through a moderately challenging asana practice, participants rose from child’s pose to find themselves with a healthy beer sample from Oakville’s Cameron’s Brewing to be mindfully experienced through a 5-minute beer meditation.
After the yoga portion of the festivities, it was great to mingle with participants over more delicious Cameron’s craft beer and learn what part of the yoga class stood out to them. For some, they were surprised at how challenging the yoga practice was, considering it was a social event, and for others that the beer meditation allowed them to think about how they apply mindfulness to other areas of life.
We were blessed to sample two awesome beers from Cameron’s Brewery: Captain’s Log Lager and their new Dark & Sticky IBA. The Lager was an easy choice to begin the sampling with due to its smooth refreshing taste which is soft on bitterness and intensely aromatic with scents of lavender, citrus, allspice, and brown sugar. Next, we socialized while sipping their India Brown Ale, Dark & Sticky, a hop-filled IPA with a well-balanced brown ale, combining the best of both worlds. Be sure to keep an eye out for both of these brews on tap around the city and in LCBO’s and grocery stores near you.
We are always happy to support our community with programming and especially happy when it can elevate a charity’s mission to raise funds and awareness for their cause. Congratulations to Will Bulmer and the rest of the Movember Ottawa team for doing such a great job working hard to elevate the goals of Movember Canada and for sharing their personal stories surrounding men’s health.
We would love to host future events at Wallack Galleries and already can’t wait to work with the fun team over at Cameron’s Brewing. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the cause and for the rest of you sad staches who missed it there are still a few Movember Ottawa events happening this November in Ottawa as well as all year round. Be sure to check them out and follow their progress over on their Facebook page here.
